Step-by-Step Guide
- 1. (3 min) Open with soft music. Start diffuser or scented cotton balls.
- 2. (10 min) Offer each scent one at a time. Ask: "What does this smell remind you of?"
- 3. (5 min) Offer texture items. "Which is softest? Which is rough?"
- 4. (2 min) End with preferred scent. Deep breathing.
Difficulty Versions
Moderate: Explore aromatherapy for wellness: sleep, mood, energy.
Easy: Document observable responses. Note which scents produce engagement.
Memory-Friendly: This is a primary intervention for non-verbal and advanced dementia residents. Document reaching, smiling, eye contact, calming, or vocalizing in response to each scent.
